Prefinished vs. Site Finished Hardwood Flooring

Clients frequently ask us if or not unfinished floors is better. I'd normally only recommend website finished floors if you're attempting to match an current website finished flooring and are rebuilding the whole location. We don't suggest it for boards around 2-1/4" wide.

There's a misconception that website finished floors is totally sealed and won't move. The truth isthat wood will shrink and expand with changes in humidity, and openings in a website finished flooring are a lot more noticeable compared to prefinished. When website finished floors shrinks in winter, the openings that develop will decode the end, which can be particularly true in broader boards.

Also, since the boards in a website finished flooring are stuck together by the end the gaps will grow at the weakest point in the end which may be every 3- 4 boards. This is called"side bonding" and doesn't occur in prefinished floors. In a prefinished flooring the boards are free to shrink individually so you've got little gaps between each plank, rather than large gaps randomly throughout your floor.
