THE BIG DECISION: IS IT BETTER TO REFINISH HARDWOOD FLOORS OR REPLACE THEM WITH NEW HARDWOOD?

This depends on many factors, including the age and condition of your hardwood, your preference for hardwoods, your budget, and how much you value your current hardwood.

Refinishing hardwood floors should cost you less than replacing them. Apart from the cost of new wood, if you replace them, you will also have to pay for labor and removal costs.

These boards can be replaced if your floors are refinished. It will cost less to replace the whole floor than replacing a few sections.

Refinishing hardwood flooring is more expensive than replacing it. However, there are times when new hardwood flooring is a better choice.

1) It may be time to replace your floors if they are very old, 100 years old, worn and have been refinished numerous times.

2) You can see the "tongue", where the boards connect together. It's time to replace your floor.

3) If your floors seem a bit bouncy or not very strong, it may be time to replace them.

4) Holiday gatherings: If you suddenly decide to host holiday parties and your wood floors make it difficult, replacing them will often take less time than refinishing.

It can take time to finish a home, especially if it is furnished fully and has furniture all over.

You should consult an expert wood flooring contractor like Floor sanding South Woodford when you are considering refinishing or replacing hardwood floors. What Is White Washed Wood Flooring?

White washed wood at the same time was the option chosen by those men and women who couldn't afford paint, however in recent years that has changed. The white washed appearance on wood has been a popular look for at least a few decades, mainly because it provides a look of background, a look of age and adds a genuine charm to even the easiest of wooden products.

White washed wood flooring was traditionally made by applying a calcium hydroxide and chalk mixture into wood to make it seem as if it has been distressed by the test of time. An extremely popular option in the latter part of the previous century, white engineered hardwood floors still lends itself now to light and airy interiors, especially those of the New England appearance and style. Typically twinned with creams, off-whites and an occasional dash of stars and stripes or even marriage jacks, the New England design is synonymous with understated elegance and serene, relaxed insides.

In its normal condition, whitewash remedies to a hard paint over quite a few times and in order to not lift the surface of wood flooring will normally be finished with a oil or sponge topping. One of the main attractions of white washed wood flooring is the treatment really enhances the grain of the wood, which makes it stand out and look especially textured. Even though you can treat wood to look white washed , this is a significant job if you are tackling a complete room.

That said, if you've got a small room and fancy offering white washing a move, it isn't all that difficult. All you have to do is sand down the wood to its original state and clean away any dirt or dust that is remaining. To achieve the white washed look, you need to use a watered down comforter, which, to get a well-weathered look, you should apply with a rag throughout the floor, after the grain of the wood as you move. Whenever you do this, work in long strokes and keep an eye out for knots in the wood as you go, taking the time to work the paint into the knots to actually bring out their beauty. You'll likely discover which you have to apply several coats depending on the look you hope to attain, but either way, it's important to make sure you let each coat dry completely before continuing on to another. If you find you have over-done the paint effect you can always sand some of it away to add to the distressed look. Once you've completed, you must seal the floor, either using a polyurethane sealer or a finishing oil.

All that said, if you are looking a new flooring project from the eye and you're in a position to select white washed wood flooring from the range accessible in the flooring provider, you should be pretty much spoilt for choice. With engineered and solid wood alternatives available, you will be able to achieve a white washed appearance, no matter if you prefer a walnut or a walnut base.

When choosing a particular color for your hardwood flooring it can be a daunting task.

With so many stains, finishes and styles of wood floors this might be the most difficult part in regards to it. When it's down there is no going back... or is there?

The natural beauty of wood is that it's a reusable solution, hence where stained wood flooring comes from. For the most part, the majority of flooring laid is fabricated and new when sold. It can come either unfinished or finished. You could have a rough idea in terms of a dark, light or medium colours which you would like to fit an existing or soon to be present decor. Prefinished vs. Site Finished Hardwood Flooring

Clients frequently ask us if or not unfinished floors is better. I'd normally only recommend website finished floors if you're attempting to match an current website finished flooring and are rebuilding the whole location. We don't suggest it for boards around 2-1/4" wide.

There's a misconception that website finished floors is totally sealed and won't move. The truth isthat wood will shrink and expand with changes in humidity, and openings in a website finished flooring are a lot more noticeable compared to prefinished. When website finished floors shrinks in winter, the openings that develop will decode the end, which can be particularly true in broader boards.

Also, since the boards in a website finished flooring are stuck together by the end the gaps will grow at the weakest point in the end which may be every 3- 4 boards. This is called"side bonding" and doesn't occur in prefinished floors. In a prefinished flooring the boards are free to shrink individually so you've got little gaps between each plank, rather than large gaps randomly throughout your floor.
